Driven by a vision of reducing single-use plastic waste in oral care, Earthmade set out to create a refillable dental floss container that aligns with the needs of conscious consumers.

Made from Bamboo-O, an innovative eco-friendly material combining starch's flexibility with bamboo's toughness. Bamboo-O mimics the rigidity of plastic but is entirely home compostable.

The Brief

Globally, dental floss is used by millions daily to maintain healthy gums and teeth. Yet, the environmental cost is significant—plastic floss containers are often discarded after use, contributing to the growing issue of plastic waste.

Earthmade saw an opportunity to innovate within the oral care market. The brief was clear: create a reusable holder that is compact, user-friendly, and attractive while aligning with Earthmade's sustainability ethos.

On-the-go

Small enough to slip into a purse or pocket, the holder is portable for users on the go. Its soft, tactile form is designed to be comfortable and easy to handle, making it a functional and approachable tool for everyday use.

The two part container ensures easy refilling with a simple twist to open, allowing users to replace the floss spool quickly and without hassle.

Design Development

The development process began with extensive prototyping, focusing on balancing functionality and aesthetics while ensuring the Bamboo-O material constraints remained a central consideration in every design decision.

Early prototypes explored different locking systems, shapes, and dispensing mechanisms. Feedback from focus groups helped refine the rotation mechanism and compact form, ensuring that it met the practical needs of everyday users.

The container colour palette features fresh blues, greens, and off-whites, reflecting the cleanliness of oral care while embracing a modern, contemporary palette.

The inner component features a matte finish, offering a tactile, non-slip surface that aids handling and refilling, while the outer case has a gloss finish making it easier to clean.
